Pendaftaran tanah adalah rangkaian kegiatan yang dilakukan oleh Pemerintah secara terus-menerus, berkesinambungan dan teratur meliputi pengumpulan, pengolahan, pembukuan dan penyajian serta pemeliharaan data fisik dan data yuridis dalam bentuk peta dan daftar, mengenai bidang-bidang tanah yang sudah ada haknya dan hak milik atas satuan rumah susun serta hak-hak tertentu yang membebaninya.
Apabila berbicara tentang Pendaftaran Tanah, di Indonesia terdapat bermacam-macam status tanah yang belum terdaftar menurut UUPA antara lain tanah bekas hak adat, Tanah Negara bekas hak barat dan Tanah Negara bebas. Untuk memperoleh status hak atas tanah dari tanah bekas hak adat dan hak-hak lain menjadi hak menurut UUPA diperlukan alas hak yang berbeda-beda dan dengan prosedur yang berbeda pula.
